MESSAGE FROM THE PROGRAM DIRECTOR
Congratulations on choosing nephrology, the most intellectually stimulating and deeply rewarding of specialties!
Jessica Sheehan Tangren completed her MD at the University of Pennsylvania before returning to her hometown of Boston for medical residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She stayed for fellowship at the BWH/MGH Joint Nephrology Fellowship Program and received her MPH at the Harvard School of Public Health before joining the renal faculty at Mass General in 2018. Jess’ research and clinical interests are focused in obstetric nephrology. She does clinical research on renal adaptation to pregnancy and preeclampsia and has an outpatient clinic focused on Women’s Health and nephrology. Jess is starting as the MGH Associate Program Director in October 2021. She lives with her husband, two daughters, golden retriever and her beloved Peloton in Cambridge, MA.
Joe Bonventre is Samuel A. Levine Distinguished Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Constantine L. Hampers, MD Distinguished Chair in Renal Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH). He is former President of the American Society of Nephrology, Director of the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology, member of the NIH-NIDDK Council, and is the Chief of the Renal Division at BWH. Dr. Bonventre is also founding Chief of the Engineering in Medicine Division of BWH. Dr. Bonventre’s own research focuses primarily on the study of kidney injury and repair and signal transduction, with a special emphasis on the role of inflammation, biomarkers and stem cells. His recent work also involves the generation of kidney organoids from stem cells and their use in kidney disease modeling. He has had more than 200 trainees in his laboratory, many of whom are in leadership positions throughout the world. Dr. Bonventre is invested in the education and success of each Renal fellow and works with each fellow individually on their career and research goals.
Eugene Rhee is Chief of the Nephrology Division at the MGH, a Principal Investigator in the Nephrology Division and Endocrine Unit at the MGH, and an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where he also received a Masters in Bioethics. He completed residency and chief residency at MGH, followed by fellowship in the combined BWH/MGH program. His laboratory studies kidney metabolism using epidemiologic, physiologic, and experimental approaches, with the goal to identify novel markers and mediators of kidney disease and its complications. He lives with his wife Kat and two daughters in Newton.
Nicole grew up in New England and has lived in Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe. She received her Bachelors’ degree in Marketing from Plymouth State University in Plymouth, NH and her Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Trinity College London. She taught in South Korea and Czech Republic, and also as an Adjunct Professor of ESL, teaching students from over 25 countries!
Born in Boston, and raised on Cape Ann, Wendy DeMille graduated in 1978 from Simmons College with a degree in History. She began her career at MGH on July 6, 1974, transitioning to the Renal Unit/Nephrology Division in 1979 when she became the Secretary to Dr. Nina Tolkoff-Rubin and Dr. Robert Rubin and working with the Hemodialysis Unit and Transplant Service. Wendy has served as the MGH Renal Fellowship Coordinator since 2006. For 46 years Wendy has served patients and their families with distinction, kindness, and professionalism. Wendy lives in the South End of Boston and enjoys spending time with her close friends, many of whom are present or former MGH doctors, nurses, or administrators. She has an extraordinary memory, especially when it comes to the MGH and the Renal Fellowship Program.
